It’s time for the House to act

Senate Republicans, led by Majority Leader Harvey S. Peeler are imploring the S.C. House of Representatives to follow the Senate’s lead and wrap up the state’s business today.  The Senate has tackled the two issues that the House has used as roadblocks in the way of passing a state budget and bringing the 2007 session to a close.  Yesterday, the Senate finalized the Workers’ Compensation Reform package and today adopted the conference report on DOT Reform contingent upon the House taking action.  The Senate has already indicated that it is ready to sign the budget, as well. The House needs to address these issues and to pass the state budget.  Until then, the Senate must sit and wait as the House continues to delay these reforms at the taxpayers’ expense.

“We have gone as far as we can without the cooperation of the House,” said Senator Peeler.  “The state budget is waiting to be signed.  The Senate has passed Workers’ Compensation Reform, as well as DOT Reform.  We are sitting at the goal line waiting on the House.  The time has come for the House to live up to its end of the bargain.”

Senate Judiciary Chairman Glenn McConnell said “The House leadership loves to play politics in the media.  They say that they are committed to passing DOT reform.  Unfortunately for the people of South Carolina, they don’t practice what they preach.  The DOT Reform bill has been approved by the Senate but the House won’t even bring it up for a vote.  I hope Governor Sanford will ask the House to get their act together and finish reform and let us go home.”

Senator Jim Ritchie (R-13), Majority Whip, said, “After tolerating weeks of verbal jabs from the House, the Senate has proven again this week that it is willing to finish the work we were sent to Columbia to do.  Each additional day we spend in session results in a substantial cost to the taxpayers of South Carolina.  We call on the House to reform DOT, give the state its budget, and bring this session to an end.”
