Representative Bill Clyburn has conceded defeat to a Republican political newcomer in the race for an open state Senate seat.
Shane Massey won the seat by 138 votes out of more than 14,000 cast after a mandatory recount. The 32-year-old Massey is a lawyer in Aiken.
Clyburn is a former Aiken city and county councilman who has served in the House since 1995. He is also U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn’s cousin.
The senate District 25 covers parts of Aiken, Edgefield, McCormick and Saluda counties.
The seat came open in July when Democrat Tommy Moore resigned to lobby and do public relations work for the payday lending industry.
