Columbia, SC - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a State Constitutional Amendment (S.1070) that would require candidates for any elected office in the State of South Carolina to submit the results of a recent drug-test along with their candidate filing papers.

“Today’s action moves us one step closer to allowing the voters to speak on the issue,” says Senate Majority Leader and primary sponsor of the bill Senator Harvey Peeler (R-Cherokee). “I appreciate the work of the committee and I am glad the bill is continuing to move forward.”

Senator Peeler proposed the Constitutional Amendment as a foundation for future statutory legislation that will set the parameters of the bill.

The Senate Judiciary Committee did adopt an amendment to the original bill expanding the reach of the Constitutional Amendment to include among others: judges, gubernatorial appointees, General Assembly appointees, and locally elected officials.

The bill now goes before the full Senate for consideration. If the bill passes the General Assembly this session it would be on the ballot in November.
