Candidates address education at forum

S.C. Sen. Shane Massey, R-Edgefield, and his Democraitc opponent in District 25, Greg Anderson, expressed their support for public education at a legislative forum Monday.
The USC Aiken chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, a professional organization of educators, hosted the event at the Aiken County Historical Museum.
Massey, an Aiken attorney, said education funding will be one of the top legislative issues in the 2009 session. He acknowledged that the timing was terrible for Act 388, the property tax reform measure, to go into effect. Read more
Sen. Grooms gets Champion award

State Sen. Larry Grooms, R-Bonneau, received the Palmetto Family Council’s Legislative Champion award.
The nonprofit education foundation recognized Grooms for playing a role in “every pro-family piece of legislation” the Legislature made law during its last session, said Oran P. Smith, council president.
Grooms said, “The Family Council represents the ideals I’ve supported from my first day in office — faith, family, traditional values.” Read more
County aims for efficient airport

Horry official explains study advice, action
Horry County has implemented most of the 16 recommendations in a 2006 study aimed at increasing the efficiency of its airport operations, County Administrator Danny Knight told a state airport panel Wednesday.
The panel, led by state Sen. Luke Rankin and Rep. Alan Clemmons, is investigating whether the county’s four airports, which are run as a county department, could be better managed by an airport authority.
Rankin and Clemmons supported failed state legislation earlier this year to create an authority, which would have been made up of unelected appointees from various governments. The panel, comprising local political and business representatives, must submit a report on their findings to the state legislature next year. Read more
SC Senate Majority Leader supports roll call votes

State Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler said this morning he will push for a rules change when the Senate meets next to require legislators to cast more recorded votes, even if it means slowing down the Senate.
The issue has been pushed by Gov. Mark Sanford and is supported by some House members and Senate President Pro Tempore Glenn McConnell. House Speaker Bobby Harrell has questioned the need for it and the cost of such a change.
Rep. Nikki Haley of Lexington unsuccessfully pushed a bill during the last session to require roll call voting for all legislation dealing with spending matters. She said she is introducing such legislation again. Read more
