Here’s a great article from the Beaufort Gazette.  We are looking forward to having Catherine Ceips as part of the team.

Ceips could enjoy easy Senate win
Republicans have occupied Beaufort County’s state Senate seat since 1993.

The special election to choose Beaufort County’s next state senator is still two weeks off, but voter history and campaign war chests suggest it may be over already.

Rep. Catherine Ceips of Beaufort beat out three seasoned politicians for the Republican Party’s nomination in a May 1 primary and May 15 runoff. Political newcomers Terry Thomas, a Democrat from Lady’s Island, and Greg Graziani, a Libertarian from Hilton Head Island, now stand in her path to the state Senate.

Republicans have held the seat since 1993, and the candidates’ latest campaign finance reports show huge disparities in how much cash they have at their disposal.

“I don’t have all the money some other candidates do,” Thomas said. “It’s coming right out of my own pockets.” His latest campaign finance report, dated March 15, lists no contributions, though he said he spent about $2,200 on signs.

Graziani’s latest report, dated April 1, lists $2,000 in contributions. Since then, Graziani’s television spots have begun to air.

Meanwhile, Ceips already has spent about 10 times more than either of her remaining opponents on signs and direct mailings with more left to spend. Her latest report, dated April 13, lists $44,518 in total contributions, with $21,665 remaining.

Despite her advantages, Ceips is playing it cool.

“It’s not my style to talk about other candidates,” Ceips said. “I’m treating the election seriously.”

The other two candidates will get more exposure June 7 when the League of Women Voters of Hilton Head Island hosts the three candidates in a forum.

Graziani said he is looking forward to the forum because his campaign is primarily about spreading his ideas.

“It’s not so much about winning, it’s about getting the message out,” Graziani said. Winning, he said, would also help spread his party’s message.

The Libertarian Party is a marginal party nationally compared to the GOP and Democratic Party, but Graziani said he thinks most South Carolina voters’ goals are in line with his own: smaller government, lower taxes and more personal freedoms.

Thomas doesn’t want to be discounted, either.
