MEET CHIP CAMPSEN

Sen. Campsen has long been regarded as one of South Carolina’s most effective legislators. Before being elected into the Senate in 2004, Campsen served as a member of the State House from 1997-2002. In 2002, The State newspaper named Chip Campsen one of the most effective members of the General Assembly. During his 6 years in the House of Representatives, Chip authored over 30 pieces of legislation that passed into law, including:

• Conservation Bank Act
• Future Scholar tax-free 529 college investment accounts
• Religious Freedom Act
• Capital Gain Holding Period Reform Act
• Conservation Incentives Act
• Prudent Investor Act
• Estimated Income Tax Reform Act
• Groundwater Use and Reporting Act
• Estate & Probate Reform Act
• Requirement that prisoners pay victim restitution, and room and board
• Released Time for Religious Education Act
• Resolution helping to end permanent law changes in the state budget

Chip Campsen is a lifelong resident of the Charleston Area. After graduating from Wando High School, he attended Furman University where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1981. Senator Campsen also holds a law degree and an MBA from the University of South Carolina.

Currently Senator Campsen resides on the Isle of Palms with his wife Lalla Lee and his two sons, George and Boyce. He is a small business owner and lawyer. Senator Campsen is also a licensed real estate broker, and holds a 100 ton Captain’s license from the U.S. Coast Guard 

A recipient of the Order of the Palmetto, Campsen has been extremely active in the community. Earning his Eagle Scout Award as a teenager, Chip currently serves as a member of the Boy Scouts of America Troop Committee. He also serves on the Board of Visitor for Charleston Southern University, the President’s Advisory Council for the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston County Public Schools Blue Ribbon Committee, Palmetto Family Council Advisory Committee, Justice Fellowship Task Force on Criminal Justice Reform, and the SC Baptist Convention Committee on Constitution, By-Laws and Business and Financial Plan.

CHIP CAMPSEN FUN FACTS

Legislative Goals: Government restructuring, tax reform, efficient and accountable government, preserving our quality of life, accountability and excellence in education, disciplined budget policy, defense of our freedoms and values, and tort reform.

Hobbies: Hunting, fishing, surfing and skiing with family.
