MEET DAVID THOMAS
David Thomas, a resident of Fountain Inn, South Carolina, is a dedicated family man and respected 18-year Republican State Senator. David Thomas was born and raised in South Carolina. Sen. Thomas attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he earned a B.A. in 1971. Following graduation, Thomas attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where he graduated in 1975 with a Master of Divinity. Four years later, Thomas received a Master of Arts from Texas Christian University and in 1995 he obtained a law degree from the University of South Carolina.
Thomas married his wife Fran in 1984 and moved to Fountain Inn where he became the President of the family printing business. As a businessman, Thomas learned how to succeed in business by producing a quality product in a competitive industry. He also learned the impact that government regulation and red tape can have on the lives of working families and small businesses.
A strong conservative, Thomas successfully ran for Greenville City Council in 1979. Four years later, Thomas was voted Mayor Pro Tempore. During this time Thomas established himself as a strong leader willing to take tough stands. In 1984, Thomas successfully ran for State Senate, winning both a primary and general election. At the time, Democrats controlled the Senate and Thomas quickly established himself as a leader to be reckoned with in the Republican minority. Since his election to the State Senate in 1984 Thomas has fought day in and day out for conservative reforms in the State Senate and earned the respect of conservatives and liberals alike.
An outspoken reformer, Thomas helped lead the fight for landmark residential property tax relief and welfare reform. As Chairman of the Senate Corrections Committee, Thomas was a Senate leader in passing “truth in sentencing” and “three strikes and you’re out” laws. Thomas currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee and is a member of the Finance Committee, Corrections and Penology Committee, General Committee, and Medical Affairs Committee.
A proven conservative with a bi-partisan approach to getting things done, Thomas founded The Litter Task Force, which was organized in 1999, ultimately becoming Palmetto Pride, the Governor’s Council on Beautification and Litter. As the Chairman of Palmetto Pride, Thomas is committed to statewide beautification and the eradication of litter in South Carolina. Because of his successful efforts, Thomas is recognized as a national leader on environment and beautification issues.
