MEET JOHN HAWKINS
A life-long resident of Spartanburg County, Senator Hawkins is a graduate of Dorman High School and a Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude graduate of Wofford College. John graduated with honors from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was the Managing Editor of the South Carolina Law Review, and a member of the Order of Wig and Robe.
Upon graduation from law school, Senator Hawkins served as law clerk to Justice E.C. Burnett, III, who served as both a Circuit Court Judge and then Justice of the Supreme Court of South Carolina. His service with the S.C. Supreme Court ended when he decided to offer as a candidate for the S.C. House of Representatives. At the age of 27, John was elected by an overwhelming majority of 74%, and was elected by his 30 fellow freshman house members as Chairman of the House Freshman Caucus. He served on the House Judiciary Committee, and is perhaps best known for stopping the sale by SCDMV of 3.5 million driver’s licenses to a New Hampshire Company called Image Data. John was also recognized by the South Carolina Victim’s Assistance Network for his work on behalf of the victims of crimes in this state.
After four years of service in the House, John ran for the S.C. Senate and was elected by 69% of the vote. At 32, he became one of the youngest members of the Senate.
John is a 20 year veteran of the South Carolina National Guard, and currently serves as a captain in the Judge Advocate General Corp (JAG). He and his wife Andrea have two children, Jennifer Lauren and Haley Pamela. Currently, John is in the private practice of law in Spartanburg, and has handled a variety of both criminal and civil litigation, as well as representing business in the courts of this state.
