Leatherman: High School Aged Students Now Able to Enroll In Online Courses

With education playing such a vital role in the lives of young people, we must make sure that we are giving them every opportunity to secure a solid foundation for their futures. Being that the Internet and advanced technologies are playing a much larger role in all of their lives, we must begin to use these technologies on a more regular basis within the educational community.

During this past legislative session, the General Assembly took a good bit of time to debate the issue of online courses for individuals of high school age. After we heard both sides of the argument, we determined that “virtual schools” would be beneficial for our students.

The virtual schools bill, H. 3097, allows students to participate in online courses, which may not be readily available at their school. This bill allows “first-come, first-serve” access to the program for all students across the state of South Carolina, including private and home-schooled students.

The virtual school program will operate within the same standards and requirements as the traditional courses and their workloads.

I look forward to seeing the success of this program, as we seek to expand the educational opportunities for our young people.

Once again, if I can ever be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours very truly,
