Leatherman: Legislation Calls For Insurance Coverage of Autistic Patients

Throughout the past legislative sessions, an incredible amount of time was spent researching and debating insurance coverage for individuals diagnosed with autism.

The Senate bill, S.20, directs insurance companies to provide insurance coverage for autism to their customers. Not only will this mandate apply to private insurance companies, but will also include the state health plan as well.

It has been presented that 50 percent of autism cases could be reversed, while also showing that the other 50 percent of autistic patients could avoid being wrongly institutionalized if proper care and therapy was an option. The need to assist the patients with this horrible disease is loud and clear!

I am extremely happy that the General Assembly saw the need and importance of this bill to become law.
Once again, if I can ever be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours very truly,

Hugh K. Leatherman
South Carolina Senator
District 31, Florence and Darlington Counties
