Leatherman: Senate Works to Pass Legislation That Reduces Crime Throughout South Carolina

Filed Under Caucus, Top News, Leatherman

Throughout this past legislative session, we as a Senate, took great strides in making South Carolina a safer place to live. We worked hard to ensure the safety of all South Carolinians by putting additional troopers on the road and addressing the dilemma of increased gang activity.

Additionally, the Senate passed legislation that requires criminal offenders to submit a DNA sample to the DNA database upon arrest of felony offenses or crimes that would carry a sentence of five years or greater.

The DNA samples will be maintained by the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and will be available to law enforcement officers during investigations.

Currently, this Senate bill awaits action by the House of Representatives. It is my hope that the House will take an in-depth look at this legislation and pass it, so it may become law.

Once again, if I can ever be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours very truly,

Hugh K. Leatherman
South Carolina Senator
District 31, Florence and Darlington Counties
