SC SENATORS TARGET IMMIGRATION

The Senate Illegal Immigration Reform Study Committee will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 in the meeting room at the Greer Commission of Public Works building, 301 McCall St.

Sen. Jim Ritchie, R-Spartanburg, the lone Upstate legislator on the committee, said the meeting will serve a dual purpose. It will allow residents to share their views, concerns and ideas with lawmakers who, in turn, will share information about an illegal immigration bill that the Senate has already passed. The bill is now is awaiting action in the House Judiciary Committee.

“We spent the last year having hearings in Columbia, and listening to what other states have done, and listening to experts in the field, and this is an opportunity I wanted to have for our community to weigh in on the issue,” Ritchie said.

Ritchie said the issue is “the most talked-about issue” among constituents with whom he has spoken.

The committee is also holding meetings in Charleston and Pendleton.
