A NOTE FROM SENATOR PEELER
“WHAT IS THE MAJORITY LEADER? “
Many constituents have asked me in recent months, “What is the Senate Majority Leader? What does the job entail?”, so I wanted to provide some background on this position within the Senate.
The Senate Majority Leader is elected by the senators from the party that controls the most seats in the Senate. The Majority Leader serves as the head of the Majority Party on the floor of the Senate and helps control floor debate from that position. The Majority Leader also helps develop and lead issues for the Majority Party.
What does “develop and lead issues” mean? Currently the Majority Party is the Republican Party. I am the Chairman of the South Carolina Senate Republican Caucus. It is my job to lead initiatives to promote conservative ideals including providing tax cuts, reducing the size of government and increasing accountability, fighting illegal immigration, and promoting family values. We also make it a top priority to fix education and make sure every child succeeds as well as providing adequate health care to our residents.
It was a rare honor when my colleagues chose me to serve as Majority Leader last year. I am pleased to work with my fellow senators as we strive to improve the lives of all South Carolinians.
