The Leatherman tax cuts for working families becomes law

The Leatherman tax-relief plan, which received passage in both the Senate and House of Representatives, has become law. I am very happy to report these tax cuts to you, because we were successful in reducing the tax burden for every hard-working South Carolina family.

Under my tax-relief plan, the state sales tax on groceries will be totally eliminated on Nov. 1, 2007. Also under my plan, the lowest tax bracket on personal income will be abolished, which means that all tax-paying citizens will see tax relief. By reducing the tax on personal income, all hard-working South Carolina families will save a combined $86 million per year. I fought hard to ensure that every South Carolina citizen received tax relief, while the tax-relief plan proposed by Governor Sanford would have only provided relief to the wealthiest South Carolinians.

With the elimination of the state sales tax on groceries and the lowest tax bracket on personal income, all South Carolina families will see a total tax savings of more than $285 million per year when fully implemented.

Governor Mark Sanford recently referred to the tax relief plan that I sponsored as being “the largest recurring tax cut in our state’s history.”

Once again, if I can ever be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours very truly,

Hugh K. Leatherman
South Carolina Senator
District 31, Florence and Darlington Counties
